It's time for the annual Fayetteville Freethinker HumanLight Dinner.
That is, every year our group celebrates the new HumanLight,
nonreligious "holiday" by getting together for dinner and fellowship.
The HumanLight celebration originated with a skeptics group in New Jersey. From their website:
"In Western societies, late December is a season of good cheer and a
time for gatherings of friends and families. During the winter holiday
season, where the word 'holiday' has taken on a more secular meaning,
many events are observed. This tradition of celebrations, however, is
grounded in supernatural religious beliefs that many people in modern
society cannot accept. HumanLight presents an alternative reason to
celebrate: a Humanist's vision of a good future. It is a future in
which all people can identify with each other, behave with the highest
moral standards, and work together toward a happy, just and peaceful
world."
You can read more about this secular celebration at this website:

The celebration is on or about the date of the winter solstice. This
year, the solstice is on Thursday, December 21st. We are going to have
our dinner the following day (the first day of winter).
DETAILS
What: The Fayetteville Freethinker HumanLight Dinner
When: December 22, 2006
Time: 7:00-9:00pm
Where: The Hog Haus restaurant.
430 W. Dickson Street Fayetteville, AR
479-521-2739
We have rented a private room in the restaurant. It's on the second
floor. Go up the stairs and to your left. Ask for directions to the
meeting room if you don't see it right away. The Hog Haus has a
website here, with a map and a menu:
http://www.hoghaus.com/
We will have food, fresh beer, a couple of light presentations,
interesting company, stimulating conversation, and perhaps a little
workshop.
Some fundamentalists have been frequenting the sidewalk in
front of the restaurant with signs telling people that they are bound
for hell. Sometimes they use mega-phones. Darrel has suggested we
might go downstairs from the restaurant after our dinner and have a
little round and round with the Bible-thumpers. Darrel, Michael,
Taylor and I did this a couple of weeks ago and it was fun and
informative for everyone. If the Bible-thumpers are there and feeling
super-righteous, we may do this again.
See you at the dinner!
