Twelve Step Groups and Religion

Post by RobertMadewell »

Twelve step groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-anon, and NA claim to be secluar alcohol and drug recovery organizations. Judges that have the understanding that these groups are secular often rule for alcohol and drug offenders to attend twelve step groups and require written evidence from group leaders that the offender is attending and participating in therapy as practised by the groups in question.

However, at the meetings of these and similar groups you hear references to God, members will often define to the group who God is during their sharing, formal prayers (The Lord's Prayer and The Serenity Prayer) are recited during the opening and closing of meetings, and literature is thick with references to God and how one should define God to themselves. These groups often claim that recovery is impossible without the help of some kind of God.

Those are the facts. What are your thoughts?
