Pope defends Pius XII over Holocaust

By FRANCES D'EMILIO, Associated Press Writer

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI gave World War II pontiff Pius XII a push toward possible sainthood and defended his memory from accusations that he did little to spare Jews from the Holocaust.

Benedict contended that Pius XII acted silently to save as many Jews as possible and expressed hope that efforts aimed at beatification would proceed smoothly.

Beatification is the last formal step before sainthood.

Benedict, wearing red vestments, celebrated a solemn Mass in St. Peter's Basilica to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Pius, who became pontiff in 1939, a few months before World War II broke out in Europe.

Some writers and Jewish leaders have accused Pius of not doing enough to try to stop the Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews died.

(HARTFORD, Conn.) — Connecticut's Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry, making that state the third behind Massachusetts and California to legalize such unions.

Witch doctors kill

Category: Evil • Religion
Posted on: October 14, 2008 3:17 PM, by PZ Myers

Ignorance leads to evil: albinos are being butchered for their body parts in Burundi. Witch doctors are spreading the claim that their body parts are valuable in attracting gold, so stupid and greedy people are killing them and selling off bits and pieces.

Officials have gathered all the albinos in the country into a walled safehouse to protect them, which seems like a short term solution..."

A long-running row over the rights to a rooftop section of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre could bring the entire structure tumbling down, destroying Christendom’s holiest site.

While renovations are needed across the church, the small Deir al-Sultan monastery on its roof has reached an “emergency state”, according to engineers who completed an evaluation this month.

The Times has learnt that in 2004 the two chapels and twenty-six tiny rooms that comprise the monastery were pronounced in dire need of reinforcement. They have since deteriorated to the point where engineers now fear that they will crash through the roof and into the church, venerated by millions of Christians as the site of the Crucifixion and burial of Jesus.

Yigal Bergman, the engineer who led the investigation, reported that the church, situated in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, was in a dangerous state of construction. “The structures are full of serious engineering damage that creates safety hazards and endangers the lives of the monks and the visitors. This is an emergency”.

...The church has been vigilantly managed by six competing and often fractious Christian denominations — Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian Orthodox, Coptic, Syrian Orthodox and Ethiopian — since an agreement reached under Ottoman law in 1757.

Rival denominations often battle for access or space and the congregation at the annual Easter service sometimes resembles the terraces of a boisterous football match. The keys to the main entrance of the church have been held by a Muslim family since the 12th century because the Christians do not trust one another.

The dispute over the Deir al-Sultan monastery is a more recent phenomenon dating back to Easter 1970. When the Coptic monks, who had controlled the area, went to pray in the main church and left the rooftop unattended, Ethiopian monks seized the opportunity to change the locks at the entrances before the Copts returned.

Relations between the two groups have remained tense ever since, with the Coptic Church refusing to relinquish its claim to the monastery and posting a single monk there at all times. In the midst of a blistering heatwave in the summer of 2002, the Coptic monk on duty moved his chair from its agreed spot to a shadier corner. The move was taken as a hostile manoeuvre by the Ethiopians and 11 monks needed hospital treatment after the ensuing fracas.

The rest of the church factions have been unable to mediate between the two groups, even in the case of minor repairs or renovations to the rooftop.

Sign on Bus:
"There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

The atheist posters are the idea of the British Humanist Association (BHA) and have been supported by prominent atheist Professor Richard Dawkins.

The BHA planned only to raise £5,500, which was to be matched by Professor Dawkins, but it has now raised more than £32,000 of its own accord.

It aims to have two sets of 30 buses carrying the signs for four weeks.

The complete slogan reads: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life."

As the campaign has raised more than anticipated, it will also have posters on the inside of buses as well.

The BHA is also considering extending the campaign to cities including Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh.

An LTE from my friend Ralph:

***
NIELSEN

No happily ever after for some

Once upon a time there was an old man who lived in the sky. Although he had a terrible temper and sponsored many massacres down on earth among his people, in his heart he really loved them, especially their children. In fact, he loved them so much that he sent his only son down to live among them.

The son also loved children very much, but in turn he demanded that they must love both him and his father too. If they refuse, they will be thrown bodily into a lake of fire, where they will be barbecued alive forever and ever and ever and ever and ever..., ad infinitum and ad nauseam.

Some people think this is such a wonderful tale to tell to little children, and their parents too, that they spend enormous amounts of time and money (often tax-sheltered) to spread it.

It would seem that Sam Lyman and his partner (letter to the editor, "Action not appreciated," Nov. 4) object to it. I wonder why.

Christians warn of backlash over Jesus statue case

Published Date: 12 November 2008

"Christians have warned of a backlash of art world vandalism, following a decision to halt a private prosecution of a Gateshead gallery which exhibited a statue of Jesus with an erection.

[snip]

Warning signs at the doors to the gallery warned of the exhibition's contents - which included dozens of plaster figures including ET and Mickey Mouse, all with erections."

"I believe that he [God] gives us opportunities every couple of years to communicate the gospel worldwide through secular media and we consistently blow it. A congressman in trouble, that's the time. A family member gets himself in horrible trouble, that's the time. A preacher gets himself in awful trouble, that's the time." --Evangelical leader Ted Haggard on how his drugged out man sex events may have just been a sneaky way for the Lord to better communicate his gospel.

We've got a long way to go, folks...

========================================

A poll out today from public theology think tank Theos has found that more than a third of Britons believe that the virgin birth really happened.

In the poll carried out by ComRes on behalf of Theos, 34 per cent of people agreed that the statement "Jesus was born to a virgin called Mary" was historically accurate, while only 32 per cent said they believed it was fictional.

"A federal judge today ruled that the state of South Carolina may not issue a special “Christian” license plate featuring a cross, a stained-glass window and the words “I Believe.”

“The ‘I Believe’ license plate is a clear example of government favoritism toward one religion,” said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. “The court drove home an important point: South Carolina officials have no business meddling in religious matters.”

U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie today issued a preliminary injunction forbidding the state to issue or manufacture the plates. She also ordered the state to inform people who requested the plates that they will not be available and to remove information about the plates from the state Web site."

I just saw one of these Arkansas "In God We Trust" plates the other day for the first time. The SUV it was on then ran a red light on a left turn. Link

For some reason, this cover of "The Virgin Mary" made a lot of people in Mexico upset. And it came out just in time, just before the Mexican festival honoring Mary known as the Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
