March 2011 Freethinker Meeting

Post by Dardedar »

Spring is here, and it's time for our glorious March freethinker meeting. We have some excellent presentations lined up.

When Darrel went to "The Amazing Meeting 8" last summer, along with 1,300 other skeptics, he was most impressed with a presentation by Dr. Jennifer Michael Hecht. She took the audience on a journey through history and showed how doubt has been the intellectual driving force throughout the development of civilization. She gave an overview of her book:

Doubt: A History: The Great Doubters and Their Legacy of Innovation from Socrates and Jesus to Thomas Jefferson and Emily Dickinson

We have obtained a copy and will watch the presentation she gave before The Skeptic Society at Cal Tech.

Easter is coming up at the end of next month, but it looks like our April meeting will get bumped due to our Springfest booth which lands on the same day. Doug will talk about the story of Easter and present some of the New Testament contradictions surrounding the Easter story.

Big news: We've been able to arrange a special lecture with Tom Flynn, the executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism and senior editor of Free Inquiry magazine. This will be on Sunday, April 17, 7:00pm. The fine folks over at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fayetteville have been kind enough to provide the venue for this. His talk is entitled:

“Who Are These Doubters, Anyway? The Demography of Unbelief”

We'll remind you again, but also check our website for more information and directions.

We've been informed that some folks plan their lives a little more than four days in advance and a few weren't able to make our meeting last month when they found out it was on the Sunday instead of Saturday. Since we already know all of our meeting dates for the rest of the year, we thought we'd share those now:

March 26
April 30 (most likely to be replaced with our Springfest booth)
May 28
June 26, (note: this a Sunday)
July (no meeting)
August 27
September 24
October 30, (note: this is a Sunday)
November 26
December (no meeting, solstice instead, date undetermined)

We'll put these dates on the website too.
