January 2011 Freethinker Meeting

Post by Dardedar »

Freethinkers, we've gone another loop around the sun and a new year for teaching and learning is upon us! It's time for our first Fayetteville Freethinker meeting of 2011. Join us as we get inspired and inspire those around us to stand up for reason and critical thinking. We have some interesting and informative presentations planned and some brand new speakers.

Don will speak about a recent article on the evangelical movement from the Chronicle of Higher Education.

Larry will present the first of a series on Evidence for Evolution, this first one will be on Bio-Geography.

A.J. will share some pictures and items he picked up on his trip to Washington, D.C.

Doug Krueger will explain how your horoscope sign may have changed, and what that means for your future! Everyone wants to know about the future right? After all, it is where we will be spending the rest of our lives.

Re: January 2011 Freethinker Meeting

Greetings freethinkers!

We had a very busy meeting in January with 60 attending. At that meeting, we talked about having an event for Darwin Day. Our roads have been plugged up with snow lately, so we decided against a dinner. However, we have reserved a room and arranged to have brunch (tomorrow!) at the Restaurant on the Corner (ROTC). So, we will gather tomorrow (Sunday 13) at 11:30am to raise a cup of coffee to Darwin. They have a nice brunch, reasonable prices, and good coffee.

It's easy to find. Just head north on highway 112 out of Fayetteville (you'll pass the drive-in movie theater). Another clue is that it's about half a mile past Sam's Club. Just as the road turns sharply left, it's set back on the right. Here is a map:

Go in and go to your left. The room will hold about 40, those who get a good seat will be filtered by the natural selection process of... first come first serve.

In other news, we are working to bring in Tom Flynn, the editor of Free Inquiry magazine, to give a presentation for us in April. He has given us a choice of a few different topics he can talk about. If you would like to vote on the options, we have set up a poll in our freethinker forum here:

Our next meeting will be *Sunday* February 27. Do note that it will be on a Sunday this month, not on Saturday.

Here are some of the clips we played at our January meeting:

Two clips of Daniel Everett talking about his book: "Don't Sleep, There are Snakes:"

And Randi's clip on astrology: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Dp2Zqk8vHw

That's all for now.
