March 2010 Freethinker Meeting

Post by Dardedar »

Note: Freethinker Meeting is on Sunday, at the Jones Center.

It's March, and time for another meeting of the Fayetteville Freethinkers!

Sorry for the delay but we have been scrambling. We had a big debate on "The Resurrection" in the works but with little notice, our Bible believer and resurrection defender had "something come up." Shoot.

Anyway, our March meeting will be loaded with lots of freethinker information--and great news for freethought in NWA in particular! Don't miss our BIG announcement!

We will have some of the latest news items on freethinker activities around our area. We keep busy in between meetings!

We will have our popular, "Moral Question of the Day".

Doug Krueger will give a presentation on whether the activities of animals give us clues about the nature of ethics. Can animals be held responsible for their actions? Are animals moral? What is your pussy cat really thinking?

Also, don't forget to bring a question for our new feature: "Ask the Expert." Remember we have experts on hand and standing by in the areas of: biology, chemistry, physics, philosophy, archaeology, astro-physics and piano tuning.

Bring a novel or perplexing question in one of those categories and we'll put it to our experts.

Darrel is going to talk about some of the amazing science that we may be taking for granted because it is right under our noses.

Last month we had to have our meeting at The Jones Center because of a double booking problem at the Library. It went well and they provided a very nice room for us (free). This month is the one month we knew we needed to use The Jones Center since the Library had no room for us. So, we will be back there again this month, and please note, the meeting is on Sunday.

February Meeting Summary:

Thanks to Jack and Cheryl for treating us to a presentation on Thomas Paine. We do appreciate those who step up and help with presentations so it's not just Doug and Darrel all the time!

Jack and Cheryl also presented Doug and Darrel with beautiful silver Thomas Paine coins, in appreciation of their efforts to promote freethought and Paine's legacy. Very nice, very much appreciated.

We also watched this video clip, sure to be of interest to freethinkers.

Hello Freethinkers, we have been busy little beavers.

Perhaps you've heard it on the news, or even seen the billboard, our "Are You Good Without God" campaign coordinated through the United Coalition of Reason is in full swing! It's all part of the new umbrella group we have joined along with several freethinker groups in the region. Here is the Northwest Arkansas Coalition of Reason website created to help people learn about us. We didn't even know there were this many groups springing up.

So we have been talking to the media and getting some good exposure. The response, as predicted by United CoR, has been mostly positive. See our forum discussion on this here. There has also been a lot of discussion on the KNWA Facebook page, almost 300 responses Wednesday. If you're on Facebook, join in.

United CoR has helped facilitate all of this and funded the over $8,000 for the sign (several buses will also have advertisements) and they have only asked that we furnish them with one thing. They would like a photo of us, a bunch of us, with the sign. It's really not too much to ask.

So this Saturday, we will gather by the Very Expensive Billboard and partake in a picture for the archives. It's located on a little road that is hard to find, and parking is limited, so we will meet at the new Macadoodles at the Elm Springs exit in Springdale. See a map here. We can do a little car pooling from there.

Let's meet at 11:45 this Saturday. We'll hang around until 12:00, or maybe a few minutes after. If you are just a little later than that, here are directions to the sign:

From Macadoodles go about 1/4 mile West on Elm Springs road. At the light, turn right on N. Oak Grove Rd. Go about a 1/4 mile then bear right on Bob Mills Rd. Our sign is on this road, less than a mile down. It's across the street from a church (purely accidental).

So, if you can come and help us out, please do. The more the better. They don't call us the Fearless Fayetteville Freethinkers for nothing.

In other news, Springfest is coming up this month. It happens to be right on our meeting day (April 24) so we will not have a formal meeting this month. Just come by and visit us at our Freethinker booth on Dickson street. We'll probably have extra attention because of our involvement with The Scandalous Sign. We'll send out a notice about this as we learn more.

Here are some of the clips we watched at our March meeting:

We drove some of you positively crazy with Trololo. (do not watch this more than 3 times a day)

We watched this rant from Pat Condell.

This commercial starring Moses.

In appreciation of the science around us we watched this clip explaining projector technology.

That's all folks, see a bunch of you Saturday.
