August 2008 Freethinker Meeting

Post by Dardedar »

Hello everyone,

Just a reminder about our August Freethinker meeting this Saturday at the Fayetteville library.

What we are working on:

Attorney Greg Klebanoff will explain the significance of the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding the individual right to keep and bear arms. With all of the other things going on this has not gotten a lot of attention. He will explain why this is likely to be a very big deal in the near future and beyond.

This is going to be a more relaxed meeting. We are often rushed, going from presentation to presentation. We don't always have to have the format of sitting and listening to one person present. Let's try changing that a little. If you have an article or news bit you would like to share, bring it along and tell us about it. Did you learn something new this month or discard an old belief perhaps? If not, why not? What are you using that noggin for a hat rest? Let us know what you have been thinking.

It's fun to go to the movies and see Batman (I did) but sometimes film is at it's best when used to do some heavy lifting and bring us face to face with the hard realities of the human condition. During the second half we will watch a stunning video which documents one of the most profound examples of human self-delusion in American history (would it be impolite to say the competition is stiff?). It happened 30 years ago this fall and some of our younger members may not be familiar with this event. The documentary is entitled:

Jonestown: The Life and Death of People's Temple

It really is the definitive documentary of this extraordinary cult. New footage, new audio and many survivors speak.

The compilation of critical reviews at rottentomatoes.com gives it a score of: 94% fresh. One reviewer says:

"...a frightening epitaph for what is surely one of the 20th century's most heartbreaking cautionary tales against giving one up to the will of another."

There is a message for freethinkers in this.

This month we will again be meeting in the cozy Board Room. Seating is limited to about 33 freethinkers. Come early to secure a seat. We were quite full last time but haven't had to turn anyone away yet.
