June 2008 Meeting

Post by Dardedar »

Just a note to remind you we will be having our Fayetteville Freethinker Meeting this Saturday, June 29. We've put together a snappy program that will be of interest to a lot of freethinkers. For this June meeting our theme will be:

Critical Thinking & Energy.

Question: Why hasn't the water powered car "taken off" yet? If you put the words "water car" into the search engine of youtube.com you will find lots of videos of these "water fueled" vehicles buzzing around. I would like one please. My water bill last month was $13.58 for 3,000 gallons. That's only $.004 per gallon, or put another way, over 1,000 times cheaper than gasoline. So we have lots of water and as everyone knows, there's hydrogen in water. But wait, there's energy in hydrogen. Does this mean there is energy in water?! This idea got a boost after President Bush's 2003 State of the Union address. As preparation for the meeting you might want to watch this exciting 43 second clip:

For an accurate answer to these questions about hydrogen, freethinkers know better than to look to politicians repeating lines on a teleprompter. Better to ask a chemist and or a physicist. Fortunately we will have both on hand to sort it all out. Michael will give a presentation on the pros and cons of the proposed hydrogen economy.

If you haven't heard, George Carlin died Sunday, age 71 (he loathed the softer term "passed away"). He was an outspoken freethinker who used his comedic genius and understanding of language to shock people into thinking in different and scandalous ways. Some of his quips about religion are classic. We will watch just a few of the best ones in a short tribute.

After a short break we will watch a truly excellent 40 minute video presentation on critical thinking. We are allowed to distribute free copies of this presentation so some DVD copies will be available.

MEETING SUMMARY:

***
A summary of our most recent freethinker meeting, with links allowing you to watch or pass on video clips to friends, will always be posted on our website:

fayfreethinkers.com

As promised at the last meeting, here is an email copy of the meeting summary for everyone:

Our June meeting included:

* A tribute to George Carlin, who died June 22. A provocative freethinker by any measure. We watched these three classic clips: The Ten Commandments,

Religion,

and This short tribute

LINK

(*Note, these youtube links for Carlin are always getting deleted and reposted. I these fail to work, just use the youtube search engine with the key words used above.)

* Darrel presented our introductory definition of "What is a Freethinker?"

* Michael gave our main presentation: A thorough explanation of the pros and cons of the proposed Hydrogen Economy. Great care was given to explain the difference between hydrogen (H) and hydrogen gas (H2). Bottomline: you cannot get net energy from water. Ever. All claims of vehicles being fueled with water (and there are lots of them) are necessarily bogus.

* Tamara gave us the "feel good moment" portion of the meeting with this video clip of Christian the Lion.

You can read the background for this clip here:

* After a break we watched this excellent documentary on Critical Thinking: Here Be Dragons.

Highly recommended. Check out his podcasts too.

We had about 35 attend our June meeting.

Our next meeting will be July 26.
