New CNN poll: Bush failing, but gaining support

Post by Savonarola »

Most think Bush is failing second term
A majority of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate in November's congressional elections who opposes President Bush, and 58 percent consider his second term a failure so far, according to a poll released Thursday.

Fewer people consider Bush to be honest and trustworthy now than did a year ago, and 53 percent said they believe his administration deliberately misled the public about Iraq's purported weapons program before the U.S. invasion in 2003, the CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll found.
The article gives a good summary of the results. I have, however, copied a few questions and their response distributions. The actual release presents much more information about the areas in which people think Bush has succeeded and failed and is worth a good look here (.pdf).

In general, are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time?
Satisfied: 35
Dissatisfied: 62
No Opinion: 3

In general, do you think things have gotten better or gotten worse in this country in the last five years?
Better: 28
Worse: 64
No change (vol.): 6
No opinion: 2

Right now, do you think that economic conditions in the country as a whole are getting better or getting worse?
Getting better: 35
Getting worse: 54
SAME (vol.): 7
No opinion: 3

Since the start of 2005, when George W. Bush began his second term as president, would you say his second term in office has been a success or failure?
Success: 38
Failure: 58
Too soon to say (vol.): 2
No opinion: 3
Note that many of the results are within the margin of error of being evenly split.

The release also shows past results. In some categories, Bush is gaining support. I find this quite disheartening.
