They must have some new dirt on the guy:

Officials: DeLay Won't Seek Re-Election

WASHINGTON - Former House Majority Leader
Tom DeLay, a Texan touched by a lobbying scandal that ensnared some of his former top aides and cost the Republican his leadership post, won't seek re-election to Congress, officials said Monday.

They said DeLay also is likely to resign his seat and leave Congress by the end of May or mid-June. That would trigger a special election for his replacement.

DeLay was expected to disclose his plans Tuesday at a news conference in Houston, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the congressman had not made that announcement.

Several officials said DeLay, an 11-term congressman, called Texas members of Congress to tell them he is dropping out of his re-election race.

"He'll resign," a former senior DeLay aide said.

I think you rejoice too soon. My bet is he's been offered a multi-million dollar contract with one of his lobbying corporations - and what he doesn't know about lobbying could join those umpteen angels on the head of a pin. The only way I see him really getting out of our hair is if he gets serious jail time - and not in a country club prison.

The other sneaky thing (besides him having a lobbyist contract lined up) is that he probably thinks with him out of the limelight (but drumming up campaign donations), they can put another R in with a special election, then the R incumbent will win in the general election. DeLay won't let go of the power reins until he stops breathing.

Heard the Demo lined up to go against Delay (Lampy?) today on a radio show. Delay is saying that he was about even in the polls but Lampy said they did seven polls of their own and Delay didn't get higher than 38% in any of them. Plus, I think there is a good chance Delay will be indicted. That would certainly mess up his election efforts. Demo's are in a good position to win the seat even though 65% of the district is so retarded they voted for Bush last time.

I know. Houston has the 2nd largest population of John Birchers in the country (believe it nor not, LA has the 1st largest - CA isn't always the "liberal" haven the Rs make it out to be - how could it - they elected Arnie as governor). So it is entirely possible that the R who will replace DeLay will win the Houston seat.

More on Republican scandals, from the top - today, Vice President Dick Cheney's former top aide told prosecutors President Bush authorized the leak of sensitive intelligence information about Iraq, according to court papers filed by prosecutors in the CIA leak case. Before his indictment, I. Lewis Libby testified to the grand jury investigating the CIA leak that Cheney told him to pass on information and that it was Bush who authorized the disclosure, the court papers say. According to the documents, the authorization led to the July 8, 2003, conversation between Libby and New York Times reporter Judith Miller.

How incompetence is rewarded in Bushland

The Architects of War: Where are They Now?
ThinkProgress.com

Wednesday 05 April 2006

President Bush has not fired any of the architects of the Iraq war. In fact, a review of the key planners of the conflict reveals that they have been rewarded - not blamed - for their incompetence.

Fifteen examples, with pictures:

Molly Ivins gives Delay "A Good Swift Kick." An excerpt:

***
To get a real sense of DeLay's cynicism and recklessness, forget the stuff the press loves, like the "free golfing trip" to St. Andrew's. Instead, take note of the following example. The Northern Marianas Islands are a US protectorate (so it can label goods "Made in the USA") in the Pacific being used as a sort of labor gulag, with workers imported from China and elsewhere and paid pitiful wages. Jack Abramoff had a contract with the government of the Marianas to lobby against stopping the flow of immigrant labor to the islands and to prevent a minimum wage bill (mandating a level higher than the island's standard $3.05 per hour) from getting to the floor of the House. The islands are home to classic sweatshops.

In 1996 and 1997, Abramoff billed the Marianas for 187 contacts with DeLay's office, including 16 meetings with DeLay. In December 1997, DeLay, his wife and their daughter went on an Abramoff-arranged jaunt to the Marianas. DeLay brunched with the Marianas' largest private employer, textile magnate Willie Tan. Tan had to settle a US Labor Department lawsuit alleging workplace violations. According to the book "The Hammer" by Lou Dubose and Jan Reid, among the violations common on the islands is forbidding women to work when they are pregnant, thus leading to a high abortion rate.

Evidently, DeLay didn't have time to look into such allegations, since he was busy playing golf and attending a dinner in his honor, sponsored by Tan's holding company. According to The Washington Post, it was at this dinner that DeLay called Abramoff "one of my closest and dearest friends." He also reminded those present of his promise that no minimum wage or immigration legislation affecting the Marianas would be passed.

"Stand firm," he added. "Resist evil. Remember that all truth and blessings emanate from our Creator." He then went with Tan to see a cockfight. This is why DeLay's professions of Christianity make me sick. He was there. He could have talked to the workers. Instead, he chose to walk with the powerful and do real harm to the very people Jesus mandated we especially care for.

And that isn't even including the forced prostitution and the forced abortions there.

Did you know that Delay can (and will) use the over a million dollars in his re-election fund - money people donated - for his legal costs to try and stay out of the slammer? I just read that this morning in a rather entertaining editorial in the Times. That was posed as one of the reasons he withdrew - because he knew he couldn't win, and he knew he needed the money for legal fees. Interesting.

Yes, just about the ONLY rule for campaign donations in Texas is not to use state-campaign-raised funds for federal elections - and DeLay figured he could get out of that one, too! He should have known better. Texas doesn't enforce very many laws, but the ones it does enforce, it enforces with a vengence.
